EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

A smoother route to compliance

The ISCC EUDR add-on is a certification-based extension integrating into existing ISCC audits and streamlines the path to compliance. As outlined by the guidance document (C/2024/6789) published by the European Commission, “Certification and third-party verified schemes can play an important role in promoting sustainable agricultural and forestry practices and responsible sourcing, in fostering supply chain transparency and in facilitating compliance.”

Understanding the EUDR

The EUDR entered into force on 29 June 2023 to reduce the EU’s contribution to global deforestation and forest degradation. It applies to seven commodities and a defined list of derived products associated with deforestation: cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy, and wood.

To place these products on the EU market or export them from the EU, operators and traders must comply with a set of legally binding requirements. From 30 December 2026, medium and large operators must comply. Micro and small businesses follow by 20 June 2027.

EUDR goals
  • Ensure that the listed products purchased, used, and consumed by Europeans do not contribute to deforestation or forest degradation in the EU or globally.
  • Reduce carbon emissions from EU consumption and production of the relevant commodities by at least 32 million metric tonnes per year.
  • Address all deforestation and forest degradation driven by agricultural expansion to produce the commodities within the scope of the regulation.
EUDR requirements
  • Deforestation-free production: Products must not originate from land subject to deforestation or forest degradation after 31 December 2020. They must be traceable to the plot of land where they were produced.
  • Compliance with local laws: Products must be produced in line with the relevant legislation of the country of production, including land use, labor, environmental, and human rights laws.
  • Due diligence and risk assessment: Operators must conduct a due diligence process and submit a due diligence statement confirming no (or only negligible) risk of non-compliance.
  • Chain of custody: Physical segregation is required to distinguish compliant from non-compliant products throughout the supply chain. Please note that EUDR compliance is product-specific and applies only to the commodities and derived products listed in the regulation. Businesses should carefully assess their product portfolio to determine their exposure.

Components of the ISCC EUDR add-on

01

EUDR add-on audit

Audit requirements are tailored to cover all EUDR requirements, encompassing legality, physical segregation, and traceability.

02

ISCC EUDRx tool

The EUDRx tool analyses deforestation-free status and summarises risks based on geolocation and national data in the ISCC EUDRx report. It assesses forest presence, deforestation spread, and proximity to forests or deforestation, along with social risks like human rights violations, corruption, and law enforcement issues affecting indigenous populations.

03

ISCC EUDRx registry

In the ISCC EUDRx registry, operators can download the geofiles corresponding to a respective ISCC EUDRx report for their Due Diligence Statement (DDS).
