Credit Transfer System

Enabling credible and transparent claims

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a key lever for cutting down on emissions in air travel, and our certification schemes already cover robust sustainability, greenhouse gas emissions reductions, and full traceability of SAF from feedstock production through to airport delivery.

The ISCC Credit Transfer System (CTS) takes this one step further. It enables verified sustainability claims to be reliably tracked and transferred after SAF uptake – addressing a long-standing challenge in the aviation value chain. Integrated with the ISCC Registry, our secure online database, the CTS allows claims to move transparently through the downstream chain. As a result, SAF suppliers, aircraft operators, logistics providers, and end customers can confidently track, transfer, and report their emissions reductions for credible climate disclosures.

Benefitsof the Credit Transfer System

For SAF suppliers

“Plug-and-play” system that complements existing supply chain certification systems.

Simple integration into existing (ISCC) trader certification via add-on audit as part of regular audits.

For aircraft operators

Practical and straightforward way of recording emissions reductions from SAF use.

Allocation of SAF benefits to end customers, and integration into corporate traveler programmes possible.

For logistics providers

Practical and straightforward way of recording emissions reductions from SAF use.

Allocation of SAF benefits to corporate end customers is made possible.

For aviation end customers

Sourcing of emissions reductions based on SAF that meets strict sustainability criteria.

Credible and transparent claims for voluntary climate disclosures.

How the Credit Tansfer System works

1

SAF delivery

The SAF supplier delivers sustainably certified SAF to the airport.

2

Register credits in the ISCC Registry

The SAF supplier registers SAF credits in the ISCC Registry, corresponding to the quantity of SAF delivered. Each metric tonne of SAF creates both a Scope 1 and Scope 3 credit, in line with GHG accounting principles defined by the GHG Protocol.

3

Transfer credits in the ISCC Registry

The SAF supplier transfers SAF credits in the ISCC Registry to organisations in the downstream value chain, including aircraft operators, logistics service providers, and aviation end customers.

4

Retire credits in the ISCC Registry

Organisations retire credits available in their account. The ISCC Registry automatically issues a retirement declaration.

5

Claim SAF credits

The retirement declaration includes information for the organisation to claim the sustainability characteristics associated with the retired credits towards their voluntary climate disclosures.

Get started in three simple steps

01

Learn how the system works

Review the System Document ISCC Credit Transfer System to dive deep into the principles, requirements, and capabilities of the system. You can find the document under further information below.

02

Sign up for the ISCC Registry

Designate a primary contact person from your company or organisation who will be responsible for all transactions and communications. Once you sign up for the ISCC Registry, your request will be reviewed. Please note: SAF suppliers are required to complete an additional ISCC trader certification.

03

Get onboarded and approved

Before your registration is approved, an ISCC expert will schedule a mandatory 30-minute onboarding call with you. In this session, you will learn about the different user roles, the actions each can perform (e.g., transferring or claiming credits), and discuss applicable audit procedures. This onboarding ensures you are fully prepared to use the system effectively and provides an opportunity to ask any final questions.

Stakeholder voices

Susanne Bouma
Head of Customer Experience & Offering, Neste
“The ISCC Credit Transfer System provides additional credibility and transparency and can play a crucial role in enabling trust and confidence in SAF as an easy and credible solution to reduce emissions.”
Wanyu Sheng-Kara
Senior Expert Product & Service Portfolio, OMV
“With the globally increasing interest for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and in-sector decarbonization, the ISCC credit transfer system enables a reliable chain of custody system beyond the boundaries of conventional mass balancing and the physical delivery of SAF.”
Bettina Paschke
VP ESG Accounting, Reporting & Controlling, DHL Express
“The ISCC registry's end-to-end tracking ensures that emission reductions are transferred reliably, transparently, and safely along the value chain. Its rigorous methodology is essential for reaching Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) goals within the aviation sector and for airline customers.”
