Recognition under Canada’s Clean Fuel Regulations

ISCC Canada CFR is recognised by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) as a certification system under section 62 of the Clean Fuel Regulations.

Clear regulatory alignment

ISCC Canada CFR provides harvesters, first gathering points, and other supply chain actors with a clear and reliable framework for demonstrating compliance when supplying feedstock for low-carbon-intensity fuels that meet the CFR’s Land Use and Biodiversity (LUB) criteria.

Built on the ISCC PLUS framework

The scheme is based on the ISCC PLUS certification system, ensuring alignment with internationally recognised sustainability principles, traceability requirements, and audit procedures. Canada-specific provisions are applied where necessary to meet CFR obligations.

Downstream supply chain compatibility

While the CFR focuses on land-use and biodiversity criteria, ISCC Canada CFR-certified material can be used downstream within ISCC PLUS supply chains. In such cases, applicable ISCC PLUS chain-of-custody options may be applied, depending on the supply chain structure.

Alternative feedstocks

ISCC Canada CFR applies to agricultural and forest-based feedstock used in the production of low-carbon-intensity fuels. Certification focuses on demonstrating compliance with the CFR’s Land Use and Biodiversity criteria.

Agricultural biomass

This category covers biomass cultivated on farms or plantations. The material must comply with ISCC sustainability principles for agricultural biomass and with the CFR’s land-use requirements, including the mandatory cut-off date of 1 January 2008.

Under ISCC CORSIA PLUS, additional requirements for farms and plantations must be met which are laid down in the form of six principles covering environmental, social and economic sustainability aspects.

Forest biomass

Forest biomass includes feedstock sourced from managed forests and forestry operations. These materials are assessed against ISCC sustainability principles for forest biomass and must meet the CFR’s LUB criteria.
